Published Description

From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns. "Henry de Grofhurst, c. 1340. Priest in Mass vestments with a lion at his feet. Thought to be a portrait brass. The entire brass was restored in 1867 and a new margin inscription added. Henry de Grofhurst built the church from an inheritance and served the parish as priest for 50 years. INSCRIPTION: The original stone of this memorial having been greatly violated and the columns and the finials of the canopy together with the border of the angels being lost were replaced by new ones of the same outline and size at the time of the restoration of this church of St. Margaret Horsemonden. A.D. 1867. Inscription in breast states he gave in 1338 the manor of Leveshothe to the Abbot and Convent of Bayham for chaplain for the church of Horsemonden and a chapel of Leveshothe.
