Published Description | From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns. "Dame Cristine, 1470, wife of Sir Matthew Phelip, citizen and goldsmith, mayor of London (1464). In horned headdress and lined mantle. A finely cut brass thought to have been engraved by the London goldsmiths' guilds. INSCRIPTION: Pray especially for the soul of Cristine formerly wife of Matthew Phelip, goldsmith, former Mayor of the City of London who migrated from this vale of misery on the 25th day of May in the year of our Lord 1470. On whose soul may God have mercy. Amen." From Bontell: The attitude of this effigy differs from the previous examples, the uplifted hands being spread apart instead of clasped together; the costume is a kirtle and mantle, the latter of very ample dimensions, lined with fur, and secured in front of the person by a cordon, having a large slide and tassels; to the waist-cincture is attached a rosary: and the head-dress resembles that worn y Lady Staunton at Castle Donington. The commemorative inscription contains the unusual expression, QUE MIGRAVIT AB HAC VALLE MISERIE. Bontell, Monumental Brasses of England (1849). |
