Published Description | From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns. "Margaret Cheyne, 1419, wife of William Cheyne in mantle, Head on an embroidered cushion supported by angels. William Cheyne was a large landowner and he gave his wife this graceful memorial. INSCRIPTION: Here lies Margaret, once the wife of William Cheyne, who died the 23rd day of the month of August, in the year of our Lord 1419. On whose soul may God have mercy. Amen." From Bontell: The costume of this effigy is a simple kirtle and mantle, with the mitred head-dress. The head rests upon two embroidered cushions, which are represented as supported by two angels with uplifted wings, and habited in the amice and alb. Bontell, Monumental Brasses of England (1849). |
