Published Description | From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. cairns. "Thomas Bushe, 1525. In fur-lined cloak and jewelled belt. With wife, Joan, 1526, in elaborate pedimental headdress with lappeta hanging in front. Her jewelled belt ends in a pomander or scent box. They stand on a woolpack and sheep. Below the figures is his merchant mark. He was also a merchant of the Staple of Calais, a merchant's organization set up by royal decree which gave its members favored trade and tariff conditions with merchants on the continent. The members all became exceedingly rich. The figure stand beneath a mutilated double canopy. There is a pun on his name in the canopy. Three sheep gambol under a bush, above the bush his coat of arms. INSCRIPTION: Of your charity pray for the soul of Thomas Bushe, merchant of the Staple of Calais and Johan deceased the .......... day of .......... A.D. 1525." |
