Description | From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns. "Sir John Cassy, 1400, Chief Baron of the Exchequer. In robes of office, with coif. His wife Alice has her dog Terri at her feet. They stand under a double canopy with the figure of St. Anne teaching the Virgin to read, on a bracket. The figure of John the Baptist was stolen from the other bracket in 1860. A mythical animal lurks in the margin at the top. MARGIN INSCRIPTION: Here lies John Cassy, soldier an formerly Chief Baron of the Exchequer to the King, who died the 23rd day of May, 1400, and Alice his wife. May the Lord have mercy on their souls. Amen." |
