Published Description | From the catalogue, An Exhibition of Medieval Brass Rubbings by Kathleen H. Cairns. "John Forty, 1458, woolman. Under a mutilated canopy with six shields bearing his merchant mark. He stands on two wool packs with his right foot on a sheep. He was a large contributor to the church and paid for the beautiful clerestory. Gloucestershire during the 15th and 16th centuries was one of the great centers of the wool trade, and vast fortunes were made. Beautiful churches were erected by the rich merchants, and large and elaborate memorials were placed in these edifices." |
