Published Description

Description from exhibit catalog English Brass Rubbings by Kathleen Cairns: "Felbrigg--Sir Simon de Felbrigg, 1417. With wife Margaret. Knight in full plate or Lancastrian armour. He wears a long broad-sword and a misericorde-a small dagger used for the final dispatch of a fallen foe. His palettes, at his armpits, are charged with the cross of St. George. His feet rest on a lion. By virtue of his office as Standard Bearer to Richard II he has in the crook of his arm a small banner with the arms of King Edward, the confessor, one of Richard's patrons. Sir Simon was a Knight of the Garter, which he wears below his left knee. His first wife was Margaret, daughter of the Duke of Teschen of Bohemia. Her father was great-uncle of Good King Wenceslas (1378-1419). She was a cousin of Queen Anne and her Maid of Honor. The elaborate canopy holds the small effigy of the White Hart, the badge worn by Richard II, after his mother who was the Fair Maid of Kent."
