Published Description

From Horowitz. 2002. Sir John wears all of the accoutrements of the cyclas style described above. His head is covered by a fluted bascinet or steel cap. His feet rest on a lion. The knight lies under the earliest surviving "ogee-shaped" canopy, decorated in cinque-foiled style and now mostly missing. His hands are bare, and he displays the arms of his father, Sir John Sr. (Fig. 1) [1997.05.0001], as was the right of the eldest son. Scratches on the chevron of his shield may well be spur marks made by medieval knights walking over Sir John's brass. After his father's death, Sir John II was knighted and entered into the lands of his father. He was elected to the incipient Parliament as a " knight of the shire" for the years 1297-98, 1309, 1311, and 1313. In October 1295, he offered 50 shillings for his father's debts, and the wooden receipt, or tally for payment, still exists. Two years later, he was summoned to join Edward I's invasion of France, and in 1308 he was named a justice in his county of Surrey. He became very ill in 1324 and died three years later.
