Description

"A very rare Japanese Bamboo carving of Daruma, signed in Tensho, dating this 1830-1870, with further calligraphy which appears to translate ‘Carved by Kyuho’, Edo period, 8 1/4” high.

Daruma is the Japanese name for Bodhiharma. Bodhiharma is said to be an Indian monk introduced to Zen Buddhism via China, during the 6th century. Daruma is found in all forms of Japanese fine art as well as decorative arts. It is believed that he brings good fortune. It is rare to find such a carving both signed and dated.

Both Daruma and Shoulao are common arts subjects to the decorative arts of their cultures. No Japanese comparables could be found." - Bernie McManus, Appraiser, Woodbury House, Connecticut, 9/15/2004
