Description

"A Japanese okimono of a seated Jizo with his legs crossed and holding a scroll in his left hand, his face with inlaid glass eyes, his garments consisting of flowing robes. 18th century, 5” high.

Jizo is the Japanese name for Kshitigarbha. Jizo is an important Boddhisattva; he was looked upon as the protector of child travelers. He is thought of as the guardian of earth (his name means “matrix of earth”).
