| Description | "An extremely rare Japanese bamboo kogo. The bamboo carved in a squash form with low and high relief carving of smaller squash, furling foliage, entwined branches and tendrils with open work. The interior with gold lacquer. Dating for this magnificent kogo is Edo period, 18th century. The small size, 3 1/4”, is consistent for kogo whether lacquer or ceramic or rare wood. A kogo is the Japanese word for incense container (powdered incense). Incense is burned in connection with religious rites and ceremonies. Incense containers (kogo) were aesthetic works of art which were and continue to be highly collectible. |
