Description | "A Chinese carved zitan rectangular box with lid, carved in relief with a Meiren [a beautiful (Chinese) woman] holding a lotus spray, another Meiren seated and holding a basket from which emerge two bats, with further carvings including the money frog/toad, all amidst clouds overall and continuous on all sides; the interior of the box bottom, with very old zitan wood, 11 3/4” l., x 7 3/4” w x 2 3/4” h, 18th/19th century, Qing dynasty. Well carved in low relief on the sides and top with sinewy dragons writhing amidst clouds, all reserved on a ground of wan emblems enclosed by key fret, the interior fitted with a zitan tray supported on four small white jade tabs, the wood of attractive color and figure, 7 1/2 x 11 1/4 in. A Rare and finely carved zitan ‘chun’ box and cover, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period (1736-1795), of oval form, the flat cover finely carved the character chun (spring) centered on a medallion enclosing Shoulao and flanked by a pair of five-clawed scaly dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls and amidst ruyi-shaped cloud scrolls, all reserved on a diaper ground, the straight sides of the cover and box deeply carved with lowering prunus branches on a diaper ground (2). Lot 3220: A zitan ‘dragon’ chest Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period, of rectangular section, deeply carved on the hinged top in varied levels of relief with a five-clawed en face dragon writhing among clouds vying of a ‘flaming pearl,’ flanked by two phoenix swooping in midair and two further dragons beneath, the front and back similarly decorated with two five-clawed dragons striding among clouds confronting a ‘flaming pearl,’ further embellished with a square lock-plate of brass cast with a dragon and a phoenix and set with a ruyi-head clasp in front and two similarly decorated hinges behind, the sides carved with confronting phoenix and dragon and set with bail handles detailed with chilong-head terminals, the tightly grained wood of rich reddish-brown colour with characteristic gold flecks. 20.3 x 46.5 x 24 cm.
