Research Remarks
Description | "A very fine Chinese zitan round, lobed form box with inlaid motifs predominately jadeite, mother of pearl and coral, 19th century/early 20th, 7 inches dia. x 4 inches high. The hardness of zitan makes it an excellent material for receiving inlaid decoration, most often mother of pearl, various semi-precious stones including coral and jadeite. The Burmese jadeite is natural in color, and the coral is natural in color. The finely carved and detailed inlays, which embellish both the cover and base, include a variety of flowers and foliage, the top with two long tailed birds. This type of inlay is often referred to as ‘applique.’" - Bernie MacManus, Appraiser, Woodbury House, 8/17/2018 |
