ZLC OH: Loi Krathong mineral paper floating lotus

During ZLC OH on Saturday afternoons, visitors can create crafts inspired by special exhibits, cultural holidays, current events, and Spurlock’s feature gallery collections. Ideal for elementary age students through adults, ZLC OH aims to help visitors explore world cultures by making crafts and spending hands-on time with objects from the Museum’s Teaching Collection.

Decorate a piece of mineral paper (which is made from rocks and has water-resisting properties) and with the assistance of ZLC staff, make simple origami folds to create a lotus flower that will float on water for 12+ hours. View a curated playlist of videos showing the Loi Krathong festival in Thailand, where revelers send lit lanterns into the sky and place candles on floating baskets in water. Take home a water-submersible tealight to make a miniature Loi Krathong floating lotus display. We’ll also share recycling information for the specialty paper. $2 per crafter; museum admission is free, and parking is free in non-metered, non-reserved parking spaces in lot D22 (behind the museum)
