The Heian Period (794-1185) was an era of great peace for the Japanese people. The arts flourished, as aesthetic skills became the aristocratic focus. The sense of Heian style and color are beautifully reflected in the multi-layered kimono worn by members of the Court, as seen in the Spurlock Museum exhibit Luxurious Layers: Kimonos of the Heian Court. Kimono creation and symbolism, court life, and the modern continuation of kimono traditions are topics discussed among the layers of wondrous silk on display.
