The Spurlock Museum invites central Illinois educators to an informational workshop on American Indian powwows. The workshop will be a preview to a new, interactive powwow exhibit opening at the Museum in March, 2023. In addition to exhibit information, a demonstration of various powwow dances will be offered by members of the Bizhiki Culture & Dance Company. Workshop Leader
Bizhikiins is the name that was given to Dylan Jennings, the workshop leader. He is a Bad River Tribal member and served two consecutive terms as an elected Tribal Council Member. He presents at many public engagements and schools throughout the Midwest on topics including traditional subsistence, sovereignty, tribal environmental perspective, cultural immersion, Ojibwemowin, Tribal Historic Preservation, food sovereignty, Ojibwe curriculum, and cultural identity.
Bizhikiins is a champion singer and a traditional dancer on the pow-wow circuit, having performed all over the world and facilitated large groups in learning to pow-wow dance for health. He is also a traditional drum maker and artist.
A University of Wisconsin-Madison alum, with degrees in Anthropology, Archaeology, Environmental Studies, and American Indian Studies, Bizhikiins is also a University of Wisconsin-Madison HEAL Doctoral Fellow. He is an adjunct instructor at Northland College in the American Indian Studies Department, where he teaches Introduction to Ojibwe language and culture as well as Environmental History. He has been a recent recipient of the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development “40 under 40” award and a recipient of the UW Madison Nelson Institute Rising Star Alumni award.
